Obituary for Heyward "Mac" McDonald

Print
Mr. Heyward “Mac” McDonald was born on November 7, 1933, in Pickens, South Carolina, to Frances “Frank” McDonald and Mary Hagood McDonald.

He attended Pickens County Training School in Easley and graduated in 1952. Heyward joined the army in 1954 and served in the First Infantry Division in Germany, as a Machine Gun Platoon during the Korean War. After his service in the army, he moved to Boston, MA, where he worked at American Built Right Company for twelve years. Heyward then worked and retired from Boston Edison after twenty-five years of being a dedicated employee.

On a bus trip, Heyward met his best friend and love of his life, Thelma Cooper McDonald, with whom he was happily married for forty-seven years. His unwavering love was evident in his exceptional care for her.

“Mac”, as many called him, believed it was important to help his fellow man. He did this in countless small ways on a daily basis and in more structured ways as well. His community service included working at Pine Street Inn, Boston Massachusetts for several years and was officially recognized for his committed service. Once he returned home to Pickens, he devoted time to supporting Meals On Wheels, and being an active member of his church.

Heyward enjoyed reading, staying current with news events and talking to people to learn about the world. A favorite saying was, "The more you listen, the more you learn."

Heyward was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Frances McDonald; mother, Mrs. Mary Hagood McDonald; wife, Mrs. Thelma Cooper McDonald; brothers, Frances Edward McDonald, Jr., his twin: Hagood McDonald, and sisters, Mrs. Ada Rice, Mrs. Louise Miles, Mrs. Carrie Cannon, Mrs. Zola Mansell and Mrs. Christine Bowens.

He leaves to cherish his memory Kevin and Stephanie Cooper of Boston MA; and other loving family and friends.
