Rev. Alonzo “Fatso” Gregg, Jr., was born January 12, 1930, in Greenville County, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Roxie Croft Gregg and Alonzo Gregg, Sr. He was educated in the Greenville County Schools, a 1950 graduate of Sterling High School, and was also a graduate of Martin Webb Theological Seminary. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and attended South Carolina State College.
Rev. Gregg accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at an early age, under the leadership of Rev. T. N. Moss at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and member of the Gospel Choir, the Friendship Club, and the Men’s Cooperative Club.
He was a diligent employee of Monsanto Company for over twenty-five years. In 1973, he accepted the call of God to preach the Gospel. He served as Assistant Pastor at Enoree Baptist Church under Rev. Joe Bell. He also served at New Life in Christ. He served as Associate Pastor at Reedy River Baptist Church under Dr. S. C. Cureton.
In 1979, Rev. Gregg became the Pastor of Staunton Community Baptist Church, where he served thirty-five years.
He served in the community in the following capacities: Chaplin, Sterling Pride Lodge #329, Baptist Ministers Alliance, and Lifetime Member of NAACP. He received numerous awards and certificates.
Left to cherish fond memories are his devoted wife of fifty-eight years, Henrietta Gregg of the home; one daughter, Aleatha (Terry) Dendy of Greenville; one son, Monsanto Stevie Gregg of the home; three grandchildren, Maria (Melvin) McClean,Tamera Dendy and Contrevis Gregg; three great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
