Betty C. Cobb departed this life on April 5, 2024. She was born in Greenville, South Carolina to the late Cornell and Mamie Wright Crosby. She was educated in the Greenville County school system and graduated top ten in her High School class. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Cum Laude, specializing in Secretarial Science and Education from Morris Brown College.
After college she married, moved to Maplewood and began a 40 year career as a teacher in the Newark Public School system. She earned a Master's of Arts Degree specializing in Reading from Kean College. Betty was certified in New Jersey as an Elementary School Teacher, a Teacher of Nursery School and a Reading Specialist.
Betty was a Life and Pearl member of Beta Alpha Omega Chapter - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Vauxhall, New Jersey for nearly 60 years. She was also a member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Club - a chapter of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, Incorporated for over 50 years.
Her professional memberships included the International Reading Association, New Jersey Education Association and Newark Teachers Union. While her children were growing up she was a P.T.A. member and a Girl Scout and Boy Scout "Mom." She also bowled with the Newark Teachers Women's League. Upon retirement she volunteered at the Food Bank of New Jersey in Hillside and the House of Love Soup Kitchen in Newark, New Jersey. She also served on the Supervisory Committee of the Newark Board of Education Employees Credit Union (NBEECU).
She loved to travel, was an avid reader and enjoyed the theater.
Betty is survived by: three children Paula D. Kelly, Karla C. Elrod and Moses E. Cobb II, two grandsons Bryce C.R. Cobb and Barron M.N. Cobb, two sisters Victoria C. Brown and Wally Q. Crosby, and many more family members and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday April 20, 2024, at 12:00 pm at John Wesley United Methodist Church 100 E Court St Greenville, SC 29601 Visitation 11:00 am
