Booker Johnson

November 25, 1943 — January 18, 2016

Mr. Booker T. “Book” Johnson was a son of the late Charlie and Nellie Ree Leonard Johnson, born November 25, 1943, in Simpsonville, SC, and entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 18, 2016, at his home after a long illness.

Booker was educated in the Greenville County Schools. He graduated from Bryson High School in 1963, where he was active in sports. He furthered his education at Greenville Technical College in Industrial Mechanics. After high school, he joined the US Army, serving three years. He was employed at Texize Chemical and Fiber Industry. He retired after 31 years of service at 3M. While working at 3M, he started Johnson's Lawn Service which he maintained until his recent health issues.

Booker was a devoted husband and father. He loved spending time with his family and friends. His hobbies were fishing, bowling, and sports and he was an avid Clemson Tigers’ fan. After his first heart attack, he quit smoking and was inspired to start an annual cook out/ smoke out to encourage others to quit smoking, he did this for 13 years. He also served as President on the Johnson-Leonard Reunion for over 20 years.

At an early age he accepted Christ into his life and joined Old Pilgrim Baptist Church, Simpsonville, SC. He sang in the choir and served as a Trustee. In later years, he united with Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church where he remained until his health declined.

Preceding him in death was one sister, Nellie Mae Harris and one brother, John Albert Johnson.

Booker was united in marriage to Dorthie Lyons Johnson on August 15, 1969. Survivors include their five loving children; Dorethea (Stanley) Durham, Fred Johnson, Jacqueline (CC) Johnson, Charbrina (Bobby) Harris, and Warren Johnson; sisters, Patricia Gordon, Ethel Duncan, Bessie Johnson, Ellen Gibson, Bertha (Munday) Crowell; brothers, Willie J (Dorothy) Johnson, Charles (Mary) Johnson and Larry Johnson; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a host of other godchildren, relatives, and friends.
