Claire Thompson

November 6, 1945 — January 26, 2016

Mrs. Claire LaVerne Vandiver “Nittie” Thompson, 70, transitioned to her Heavenly home on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late John Hose’ and Fannie Meekins Vandiver.

She was preceded in death by her parents; all three of her children, Reginald, Natalie and Julie Thompson; and her brother, James R. Vandiver.

A 1963 graduate of Sterling High School, LaVerne attended Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee and Greenville Technical College, where she received an associate degree in General Studies.

She participated in the civil rights marches and other activities which resulted in the integration of the Greenville Public Library.

LaVerne was a faithful [Gold Star (50+ years)] member of Springfield Baptist Church where she was involved in the Sunday School, youth choir, youth usher board, senior choir, senior usher board, and was, most recently, chairman of Missionary Circle Number 9.

Her employment history included Fiber Industries (20 years), Greenville Housing Authority and the School District of Greenville County. A resident of Adams Mills Estate in Mauldin, SC for 44 years (since 1972), she enjoyed traveling, shopping, haute couture and decorating, and she loved ladybugs.

Most of all, following the demise of her children, LaVerne placed emphasis on her grandchildren, spending time with them, being supportive of them in their various activities and involvement, and just being their surrogate parent.

Survivors include three grandchildren, Cavarggio Sinclair Thompson, Kristin Natalia Thompson and Ricki Alexi Paige Burton, all of the home; their grandfather, U. J. (Dicie) Thompson of Greenville, SC; five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Nancy A. Themes of Mauldin, SC; three nieces, Carol Jamille Smith, Cornelia Henderson and Heidi (Anthony) Perkins, all of Greenville, SC; nephews, Charles Latimer of VA and Kenneth Latimer of TX; life-long friends, Helen Strawder Anderson, Betty J. D’oyley, both of Greenville, SC and Janet Walcott of Simpsonville, SC; numerous cousins, other relatives and friends.
