Mrs. Claudia Mack

November 6, 1929 — August 23, 2024

Greenville

Claudia Nance Mack, affectionately known as "Ree," passed away at the age of 94 on Friday, August 23, 2024, leaving behind a life of service as an elementary school music teacher and co-owner of a business.

Ms. Mack earned a master's degree in music education and taught at several schools in Greenville County. She and her son, Robert Mack "Moss," who was a talented saxophonist, shared a deep love for music. Ms. Mack began teaching Robert piano lessons at the young age of 5, and he later developed a passion for the tenor saxophone, clarinet, and flute. In addition to teaching Robert, Ms. Mack also provided private piano lessons to her nieces and other children in the community, many of whom went on to become successful musicians.

As a business owner, Ms. Mack drew on the entrepreneurial experience she gained from her father, James Nance Sr., who owned the family's grocery store, Nance's store. She then leveraged those entrepreneurial skills to assist her husband in establishing Mack's shoe repair, which operated in Downtown Greenville for many decades.

Ms. Mack was a devoted member of Allen Temple Church, where she played piano for the choir, served as an associate member of the L.J. Coppin missionary society, and was involved with the Lay organization. She was also a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

Ms. Mack was preceded in death by her mother Ada Sullivan Nance, her father James T. Nance Sr., her brother James T. Nance Jr., her husband P.J. Mack, and her son Robert Mack "Moss". As the last immediate member of the Nance family, Ms. Mack's legacy lives on through her nieces Claudia Nance Cox (Curtis W. Cox), Sandra Nance Grier, Nicoyia Cox-Bradley (Osman Chari), and Lauren Grier. At the request of the deceased, the funeral services will be private.
