Curtis Lee Scott Walker

Curtis Walker, 95 years of age, passed on Saturday, April 25, 2020, at her home.
Curtis Lee Scott Walker was born on June 18, 1924, in Greenville, South Carolina. The 9th of 10 children, she was the first member of the Scott family to be born in South Carolina, as her parents had migrated from the state of Georgia. Curtis Lee grew up in a time of segregation, but that did not deter her from reaching her goals. She graduated from the historic Sterling High School in 1942 (one year after being crowned Miss Sterling in 1941).
In 1943, Curtis married Eugene Walker, also from Greenville, who himself was a World War II veteran and entrepreneur. Together, they raised four children who would go on to graduate from college and become entrepreneurs, educators, and businessmen. As the years progressed, Curtis Lee became an integral part of the Greenville County community. She worked in one of the first integrated factories in Greenville County, contributed her time and energy to various charities, and visited the sick and destitute.
“Miss Curtis,” as she was affectionately called by her church family, was a lifelong member of Lowndes Hill Baptist Church. During her later years, she became a prominent and respected elder, teaching Sunday school each Sunday and serving as a featured soloist on the Chancellor choir, well into her 90s. She also participated in community service on behalf of the church.
Curtis Lee Walker was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and mother-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and all of her nine siblings.
She is survived by her four children: Joyce Walker Shockley (Duane - deceased) of Simpsonville, W. Lloyd (Mary Jo) of Greenville, Harry (Tena - deceased) of Irmo, and Frank (C. Elaine) of Snellville, GA. She was also a loving grandmother to her nine grandchildren: Kevin Shockley, Deryk Shockley, Kesha (Franco) Harris, Breon Walker, Ronda Walker, Scott (Adianne) Walker, Marcus Walker, Meghan Walker, and Taylor Walker, and her five great-grandchildren, Kamryn and Khristian Shockley, Camille and Garrett Harris, and Alexandria Walker.
In addition, Curtis Lee was loved and will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church members, and friends, including special niece, Valorie Simmons, life long friend, Mrs. Catherine Cannon, and goddaughter, Carroll Berry (GG).
