Doris Mae Fruhwirth passed away comfortably at home, surrounded by her family on August 4th, 2022. She was 70 years old.
Doris was the second of three daughters born to the late Sidney and Vivian Hoffman. Raised in the mountains of Johnstown, PA, she attended Ferndale High School and then the University of Pittsburgh. There, she studied English, and met her husband, Thomas Fruhwirth, who she lovingly called "Turk.” Doris often laughed and said she didn't know what she was getting into when she married a Fruhwirth, but their time together was filled with fantastic travels that gave them the opportunity to make many wonderful, lifelong friendships. As a teacher at the former St. Paul’s Christian School, she taught dyslexic children to read and eventually provided private tutoring for numerous grateful families.
Doris and Tom were devoted to each other for more than 47 years and provided a loving and laughter-filled home for their children, Gwen and Neil.
She is survived by her daughter Gwen Fruhwirth Vagen (Greg), son Neil (Lindsey), her sisters, Donna Sebes and Denise Melius, grandchildren Levi and Maeve Vagen, as well as many extended family members.
Doris was a passionate gardener and an avid reader, who shared her love of reading with her children, grandchildren, and all her students.
Doris's resilient spirit will be deeply missed.
The family requests that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to UPMC Children's Hospital Foundation. A memorial and luncheon is planned for November 6th at Greer City Event Hall.
