Mrs. Doris “Mama Doris” Samuel McCray, daughter of the late Deacon David and Josie Ham Samuel, was born on April 6, 1940, in Timmonsville, South Carolina. She departed this life on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at Greenville Health System.
Doris was baptized at an early age and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior at New Zion Baptist Church #1. Later in life she joined Fairforest Baptist Church in Greenville, south Carolina, where she served as the mother of the church and was president of the Women’s Ministry.
Her first love was the Lord, second to that was Family, which she loved cooking and caring for. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Alberta Jackson; and three brothers, Glen Samuel, David Samuel and John Samuel.
Left to cherish many fond memories are her husband, Charles G. McCray of the home; one daughter, Gwen Valentine of Greenville; four sisters, Carolyn Thomas and Bessie Samuel, both of Florence, SC and Mary Rouse of Darlington, SC and Margaret Green of Baltimore, MD; one brother, Alray (Modestine) Samuel of Florence, SC; two grand- children, Marcus (Toshia) Valentine and Carlton Valentine, both of Greenville; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Bobbie Jean Butler and Selina (Joseph) Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends.
