Dorothy Humbert

March 21, 1925 — January 29, 2018

On Monday, January 29, 2018, at 7:43 p.m. Mrs. Dorothy Mae “Momma Dot” Thompson Humbert passed at her home in Simpsonville, South Carolina, surrounded by her loving family and supportive caretaker. Her SUNRISE into this world was March 21, 1925, in southwestern Greenville County. She was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Waddy and Bessie McCullough Thompson. According to Psalms 90:10 she lived her threescore years (60) and ten (70) and ‘if by reason of strength’ fourscore years (80) and 12 years on her fifth score (100) DUE TO GOD’S FAVOR. She was 92 years, and 10 months. She missed her 93rd birthday by 2 months.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Horace Lee Thompson (Paterson, New Jersey), and Mr. James Thompson (Greenville, S.C.); one granddaughter, Ms. Dorothy Elizabeth Rashada Thomas, three maternal aunts who had a strong influence on her life, Mrs. Blanche McCullough Perkins, Mrs. Carrie McCullough Williams, and Mrs. L. B. McCullough Epps, and a favorite 1st cousin whom she had a close sister relationship, Mrs. Veter Williams Chappel - Hurse.

Left to cherish fond memories are three loving and devoted daughters, Mrs. Rosemary H. Thomas of Simpsonville, S.C., Mrs. Jacqueline H. Williams of Piedmont, S.C., Mrs. Aileen H. (David) Sullivan of Greenville, S.C.; two sons, Mr. Truman (Brenda) Humbert of Greenville, S.C. and Deacon William Michael (Theresa) Humbert of Pelzer, S.C.; one sister, Mrs. Elroland Thompson of Paterson, New Jersey; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Mr. James Humbert of Greenville, S.C.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Frances H. Lake of Piedmont, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a host of other McCullough, Bolden, Greggs/Griggs, Chapman, and Johnson relatives and friends. The family acknowledges her wonderful caretaker, Ms. Danesha Chapman.

TUMBLING SHOALS BAPTIST ASSOCIATION - she was President of the Laurens County Tumbling Shoals Woman’s Auxiliary, member of the Missionary Circle, and served as its President, member of the S.C. State Baptist Women’s Convention, member of the Tumbling Shoals Congress of Christian Education, member of the Baptist Training Union (BTU), member/Recorder for the Morris College Rally, member of the Historical Booklet Committee, and fundraiser for Benedict College.

EDUCATION attended New Forksville, Union, and Sullivan Street Elementary Schools. She attended Chapman Grove High School, and is a 1944 graduate of Sterling High School. After retiring from Union Carbide Electronics, Simpsonville, S.C. (Kemet), she earned the Associate of Arts Degree in Human Resources from Greenville Technical College in 1998 at the age of 77.

EMPLOYMENT worked for Honea Path Shirt Company in Simpsonville, S.C. for 17 years from 1953 - 1970. She briefly worked for Her Majesty Manufacturing Company in Mauldin, S.C. She worked for Union Carbide Electronics, Simpsonville, S.C. for 19 years where she retired in 1986.

NEW FORKSVILLE CHURCH IMPACT was a lifelong, compassionate, dedicated member of historic New Forksville Baptist Church. She joined the Missionary Society in 1947, and served as its’ President. In 1950 she became a Sunday School teacher, and also served as Sunday School secretary. In 1952 she became the Church Clerk and a Deaconess when her late husband, Bro. William Humbert, became a Deacon. She was a member of the Deacon’s Wives Club. In 1956 she and her best friend, the late Mrs. Lillie Maude Stewart, started the Youth Club to train young people in parliamentary procedures, youth programs, plays, and christian education. In 1970 she started the Young Women’s Auxiliary (YWA). In 1972 she started the first Vacation Bible School. She was one of the founding members of the Senior Choir. She was a member of the Missionary Society, and served as its’ President.


CAMP JULIA STARKS was Assistant House Mother for Camp Julia Starks/Dunbar Camp, Morris College, Sumter, S.C. for many years.

FRATERNAL was a member of the Holly Spring Chapter, No. 31, Order of Eastern Star (OES).

COMMUNITY - was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

PASSIONS - loved reading, flowers, plants, encouraging others to excel, teaching, missionary work, and spending time with family.

FAVORITE FOODS - pork chops, corn, and potato pie.

FAVORITE COLLECTIBLES - pictures and books.
