Dr. B. LaConyea LaConyea Butler transitioned Thursday, August 2015. She was born November 20, 1935, in Greenville, SC, the only daughter of the late Daniel C. Butler, Morehouse College í30 and the late Ruby Brown Butler, Spelman College í30, a true "SpelHouse Baby". LaConyea was a product of the Greenville School System, excelling and graduating as Salutatorian of her high school class at Sterling High School in 1952. Upon graduation, she left Greenville, headed to Atlanta to attend Spelman College, where she graduated in 1956 as a Psychology Major. After earning her Masters degree in Psychology at Boston University and a brief teaching stint at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC, she returned to Spelman College, her great love, at the beginning of the school year in 1959 and embarked on a career that spanned five decades, until her retirement in 2014. She was a tenured Professor who worked at Spelman through five college presidents. She also received her Ph.D. in Guidance and Counseling from Atlanta University in 1972. LaConyea will be sadly missed by her daughters, Danielle (Reginald) Butler Simmons and Louisa (Calvin) Butler-Ward, both of Atlanta, GA; her grandchildren, Alexandra Nicole Simmons, of San Francisco, CA, Victoria Lynn Simmons, of Brooklyn, NY, Brantley Daniel Simmons, of Atlanta, GA and William Daniel Ward, of Atlanta, GA; her cousins, Jacqueline Gales Webb, of Washington, DC, Diana Rose Webb, of Argentina, and Joanna Joy Webb, of Washington, DC. and other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Oran W. Eagleson Scholarship Fund or the NAASC Donald M. and Isabel Stewart Endowed Scholarship at Spelman College.
