Dr. Hassan M. Behery, 87, of Clemson, SC, Professor Emeritus, Clemson University, passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt on December 16, 1927.
Dr. Behery received his PhD in Textile Engineering from the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology, (UMIST), England, 1959. He was the first PhD in Textiles in Egypt and he established the Textile Department at Alexandria University. He was instrumental in establishing the Graduate Program in Textiles at Clemson University.
He came to Clemson University in 1965 and retired in 2001. He published many papers and co-authored multiple books. He received Egypt's highest Research Award in 1968 and, in 1970, he received Egypt's Highest Educational Award from President Anwar Sadat. He received the Phi Psi Professor of the Year Award in 1997.
He was instrumental in developing and improving Textile Colleges and Institutions in many countries around the world, including Portugal, Turkey, Colombia and China. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Fellow of the Textile Institute in England and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
Hassan is survived by his wife, Mervet, daughter, Hala, and son Moody Behery. He is also survived by one sister and two brothers and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held December 5, 2015. Donations in his honor may be sent to the American Heart Association or to a charity of your choice.
