Eloise Johnson

September 22, 1931 — June 2, 2019

Ms. Eloise Johnson departed this life on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at her home surrounded by her children and other family members. She was a native of Greenville, South Carolina, and the second child of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Cunningham Johnson and the late Mr. Willie Preston Johnson.

She was educated in the public schools of Greenville County. She first started working as an OB/GYN nursing assistant. As a dedicated employee, she walked five miles to work every day for 10 years.Thereafter, she proudly worked in the textile industry and retired after 25 years of service.

She learned about the importance of having God in her life at an early age. She and her mother were devoted to their Christian faith and lived by Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding”. She was a member of Nicholtown Missionary Baptist Church and later became a devoted member of Long Branch Baptist Church. At Long Branch, she joined the Missionary Auxiliary and attended church every Sunday until her health declined in her later years.

In her personal time, Eloise loved baseball and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves. She also enjoyed keeping up with politics and watching CNN and MSNBC to stay up to date on what was happening in the world.

Most important, she spent most of her time with her family. Eloise and her oldest son, Jackie, would talk for hours about current events. She and her daughter, Deb, would enjoy shopping outings almost every weekend. She and her youngest son, Steve, treasured their days together with delicious meals cooked by Steve and lots of laughter. She played a strong role in her granddaughters’ lives by picking them up from school, cooking special meals, and, also with her great-grandchildren, showering them with love any chance she had.
Eloise was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Louise Spears, and a brother, Mr. Willie Curtis Johnson.

Wonderful thoughts and loving memories will be cherished by two sons, Mr. Jackie (Sarah) Johnson of Simpsonville, SC, and Mr. Steve Johnson of Greenville, SC; one daughter, Ms. Deborah Sullivan of Greenville, SC; her sister, Mrs. Janie P. Johnson of Baltimore, MD; a special goddaughter, Mrs. Jarriet (Robert) Norris of Powdersville, SC; two granddaughters, Ms. LaToya Sullivan of Greensboro, NC, and Dr. Shannon (David) Wheat of Atlanta, GA; one great-grandson, Allen Michael Marsh of Greensboro, NC; two great-grand-daughters, Evelyn and Olivia Wheat of Atlanta, GA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

For all of us you gave your best,
Now the time has come for you to rest.
So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep,
Your love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep.
