Mrs. Hazel Todd Channell was born on November 25, 1935, in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late Lewis Thomas and Christine Evans Todd. Hazel was a member of Rock Hill #1 Baptist Church, where she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and where her family worked faithfully.
Hazel was one of five children who worked closely and lovingly with her sisters and brother at Feaster Farm and Nicholtown Community. Her parents’ taught her to value family above all and throughout her life she embodied her parents teachings.
Hazel was educated in the Greenville County School System, and graduated from Sterling High School, Class of 1955.
She was married to the late Samuel Channell. God blessed their union with one son, Kwame, the love of her life.
Notable was her inner strength, grace, determination, beauty, quiet independence, infectious smile and amazing sense of humor. She was wise and always self-sacrificing for the betterment of her family and friends; she was organized; and she was a member of the Staunton Bridge Seniors on the Go Club. She loved shopping and working in her yard. She absolutely enjoyed being a grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend and neighbor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Channell; one sister, Sarah Griffin; and one brother, Johnnie Todd.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories, one son, Kwame (Erickia) Channell of Greenville, SC; two sisters, Ellen Redmond of Columbia, SC and Annie Morton of Omaha, NB; two grandchildren, Kwade Channell (raised in the home) and Sanaa Channell, both of Greenville; six sisters-in-law, Eula Channell, Doris Norman, Susie Jones, Ella (Jimmie) Nix, Maggie (Melvin) McDaniels and Thelma McKinney, all of Greenville; two brothers-in-law, George Griffin and James (Ella) Channell, both of Greenville; and a host of other relatives and friends.
