Mr. Herman Butler, Jr., 91, departed this life on May 14, 2020. He was the son of the late Herman Butler, Sr. and Mattie Corrine Burnette Butler of Commerce, Georgia.

He attended Sterling High School. Before retiring, he worked at Woodside Mill, C&S Bank, and Southeastern Freight Lines Inc.

Mr. Butler was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church. He sang with the SOS Men’s Chorale and the John Wesley All Male Chorus.

He was a member of the Prince Hall Freemasonry. As a mason, he served through Tuscan Lodge 21 as Honorary Past Master, Life Member, and Chaplain. Mr. Butler was also a member of the Azah No. 140 Shriners and participated in and supported several of the group’s worthy causes. He was an active participant of Pleasant Valley Connection, the Greenville County Senior Citizen’s Club of Nicholtown Recreation Center and the Sweet 16 Senior Citizen’s Club of the David Hellams Community Recreation Center. Mr. Butler was chosen “King” of several of the clubs’ King and Queen fundraising events. Mr. Butler was also inducted in the Piedmont Athletic Association Hall of Fame for his participation in football activities at Sterling High School He played semi-professional baseball in Seneca, South Carolina. Also, he enjoyed playing sports, traveling, meeting people, interacting with neighbors, sewing, and greatly supporting his family and community.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Herman Butler, Jr., was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Wilson Butler; two brothers, Claude “Bill” Butler and Robert “Tootsie” Butler; and two sisters, Mattline Manigan and Minnie Dendy.

Surviving are his three daughters, Evelyn L. Butler, Sherrill J. Butler, and Beverly D. (Charles) Brown, all of Greenville; three sons, Willie H. Butler and Thomas E. Butler, both of Greenville, SC, and Nathaniel (Janice) Butler of Greer, SC; two brothers, Horace (Almeda) Butler and William (Betty) Butler of Greenville, SC; three sisters, Willie Frank “Sister” Butler, Janice Beaty, and Lillie Mae (Ben) Whitner of Greenville, SC; five grandchildren, Katrina Brown and Charles Butler of Greenville, SC, Berry (Felecia) Butler of Easley, SC, Shaquon Butler-Brown of Greenville, SC, and Reco (Tinsu) Butler of Atlanta, GA; two step-grandsons, Scott (Linda) Harrison of Lebanon, TN, and David Burton of Pittsburgh, PA; seven great-grandchildren, Isaiah Griffin, Kameran Griffin, and Charles Alex Butler II, all of Greenville, SC, Berry Butler II, Merisan Butler, Leum Butler, all of Easley, SC, and Daniel Butler of Atlanta, GA; one great-great-grandchild, Savion Butler; two step-great grandchildren, Jada Suber of Clinton, SC and Austin Harrison of Lebanon, TN; also a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; a special friend, Ms. Patricia Grate of Pendleton, SC; and Mr. Butler’s nurse, Ms. Teresa Lewis.
