James Cooley

June 21, 1925 — May 8, 2018

Mr. James Wilson Cooley, the fourth son of the late Mr. Roscoe and Mrs. Innoe Sullivan Cooley, was born on June 21, 1925, in Belton, South Carolina, and departed this earthly life on May 8, 2018.

At an early age, James Wilson Cooley became a member of the New Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Pelzer, South Carolina. James attended the Chapman Grove High School in Pelzer.

James moved to New York City, where he worked as a manager for New York Telephone Company for many years and retired in 1992.

James was married to the late Mrs. Ollie Scott Cooley they resided in Jamaica, New York for many years. During the years James and Ollie lived in New York, they were faithful members of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Jamaica, Queens, New York under the leadership of Rev. Morgan Days, where he served as chairman of the Deacons’ Ministry.

After his retirement James and Ollie desired to be closer to their family and returned to South Carolina in 1994, they resided at 120 Amberwood Lane in Mauldin and soon after became members of the Reedy River Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. S.C. Cureton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ollie Scott Cooley; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Turner-Cuascut; seven brothers: St. Elmore, Ira, Rubin, Clifton, Jesse Paul, Archiedale and Erskine Cooley; one sister, Bernice Cooley Pugh; and one stepbrother, James Walter Sweeney.

James will be greatly missed by his loving family. Left to cherish many loving memories are one daughter, Debbie Hasin-Qasim of Long Island, NY; one son, James (Freddie) Robinson of Bronx, NY; one sister, Dorothy Cooley Scott of Greenville; one brother, Grady (Joyce) Cooley of Mauldin; one sister-in-law, Willie Mae Cooley of Greenville; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
