John Henry Sherman, a resident of Greenville, South Carolina, for more than eighty-five years, made his transition into Eternal life on Sunday, December 24, 2017, at his home. He was a son of the late McCary Sherman and Coriner Huff Sherman.
John attended the public schools in Greenville County and was a dedicated member of the First Church of God, Zet Court, where he served in many capacities as a trustee, deacon, sang with the Brotherhood State Men’s Choir and was known to the children as the “candy man”. He really loved his church family and they could always depend on him to lend a helping hand when called upon. John was employed with Bigelow Carpet until the company closed and later was employed with John D. Hollingsworth and retired after eleven years. John’s passion for singing led him to become a member of the John D. Hollingsworth All Male Chorus and continued until his health failed.
John was married to the love of his life Marjorie for sixty-four years and from that union two children were born, John Wesley and Martha Ann.
John enjoyed fishing, gardening and had a passionate love for plants by nurturing them and bringing them back to life. He loved sharing his vegetables within the community and other friends and loved ones.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Tecora Sherman Lewers and Juanita Sherman Stevens.
He is survived by his caring and devoted wife, Marjorie Walker Sherman of the home; one son, John Wesley Sherman of Greenville, South Carolina; one daughter, Martha Ann Sherman of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Mamie J. Howse of Warrensville, Ohio; two brothers, Eugene McCary Sherman of Simpsonville, South Carolina and Charles (Mary) Sherman of Piedmont, South Carolina; one grandson, John Cornelius Sherman of Jacksonville, Florida and a host of other relatives and friends.
