Lewis Mims

November 8, 1947 — June 13, 2017

Mr. Lewis Edward Mims, III, son of the late Lewis and Bertha Mims, departed this life on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Heartland West in Greenville, South Carolina. Lewis, or “Butch” as he was called, was born on November 8, 1947, in Greenville. He attended St. Anthony Catholic School, and was a proud graduate of the 1965 class of Sterling High School (go Tigers!!!). He was also a graduate of the Gardner School of Business in Washington, DC.

Lewis was the second oldest of seven children and grew up in a loving Christian home. He became a member of Springfield Baptist Church in Greenville at an early age. He moved to Washington, DC, in the late 1960’s and united with the Corinthian Baptist Church. Butch served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1971, and was honorably discharged. While in the nation’s capital, Lewis was joined in holy matrimony to Vivian Arline Despot in 1972, and to this union one daughter, Tracie Nicole, was born. He later moved his church membership to Macedonia Baptist Church in Arlington, VA, where he became very active in the Men’s Chorus. He and his wife moved to Greenville, SC in 2015 and united with Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, where he regularly attended until his health began to fail.

For 25 years, Lewis worked as a car salesman in several dealerships in the Washington, DC area. Later, he transitioned into financial services, working as a mortgage loan officer. In 2012, he retired from Industrial Bank of Washington. Lewis excelled in working with people and was responsible for financing a first car or a first mortgage for many new homeowners.

Outgoing, funny, and fun-loving is how he will be remembered. He loved sports, especially the Washington Redskins, and had a life- long love of music. He will always be remembered for “telling it like it is”.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Vivian Arline Mims; one daughter, Tracie Nicole Sellers, and one son-in-law Walter Sellers, both of Clayton, DE; one brother, Lewis Anthony (Martha) Mims of Greenville, SC; four sisters, Marie Valentine of Greenville, SC, Barbara (Walter) Aaron of Wilmington, NC, Frances Mims of Wilmington, NC, and Brenda (Wehman) Newsome of Atlanta, Georgia and a host of other relatives and friends.
