Lucius Cobbs

Mr. Lucius Lee Cobbs, Jr., was born on December 23, 1939, in Mineola, New York. His proud parents, Lucius Lee and Martha (Chandler) Cobbs had moved to New York from Aiken, South Carolina. They brought little “Lee Lee” into a loving home, and soon presented him with baby brother, Austin.

The two boys enjoyed a family life filled with interesting, caring friends. Their parents exposed both boys to a variety of people and activities that would help expand their world. Most importantly, they exposed them to the importance of the Lord in their lives. From an early age, Lucius and Austin went to Union Baptist Church (Hempstead, NY) where their father served in many capacities. It was in that environment that both boys developed a lifelong thirst for the word of God. Lucius eventually taught Sunday School, served as a deacon, and performed other functions as needed.


Lou especially loved bringing young people to the Lord and encouraging them to be all that God meant for them to be. His desire to help children led him to join the local Kiwanis club over 30 years ago. Kiwanis International is dedicated to enriching the lives of children throughout the world.

After many years, Lucius’ spiritual journey led him to Memorial Presbyterian Church (Roosevelt, NY). There, again he went to work as a deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher, and wherever else God needed him. Lucius went through life on a quiet mission to win souls for Christ. He showed Him to others through his smile, his encouraging words, and his testimony of what the Lord had done in his life.

Lou worked hard to provide for his family. He loved his children, and always wanted the best for them. Lou always said they should strive to be the best in whatever they chose to do. Always a self-motivator and an independent person, it was only natural that after several years working for someone else, he started his own business. Lou went about his business selling hospital and cleaning supplies to nursing homes, schools, and hospitals. He used his exposure to potential souls for Christ to simultaneously go about his Father’s work.

Before his health restricted some of his physical activities, Lucius enjoyed playing tennis, ( he went to see the U.S. Open every year), and playing golf. Always eager to expand his mind, about ten years ago he undertook the challenge of learning to play bridge. He became the lone male member of the Eight Plus Bridge Club. He loved every minute of it. Another thing he loved since his teenage years was jazz. He saw many jazz greats at various gigs, and he listened to jazz music whenever he could.

In the year 2000, Lucius met his wife, Norma in church. He won her over with his infectious laugh and bigger-than-life smile. They married in 2002. In 2008, God brought them to Greenville, SC and planted them in their new church home, Allen Temple AME. They were embraced by a loving church family. Lucius served as a steward, as long as his health permitted.

The Lord took him home to rest on November 14, 2018. He leaves behind to savor his memory, his devoted wife, Norma; his son, Lucius (Lisa) Cobbs; daughter Deidre (Michael) Cummings; stepdaughter, Linda Bookhard; stepson, Jarrod (April) Badger; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his loving brother, Austin; his sister-in-law, Sheree; and a host of other family members and friends.
