Margaret Johnson

December 20, 1921 — September 10, 2018

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalms 139:23-24

On September 10, 2018, Mrs. Margaret Cureton Johnson was called home to her heavenly maker. It was time for her to reap the benefits of her exemplary life. She was born in Greenville County, South Carolina, on December 21, 1921, to Henry Hope and Alice Tecora Cureton. In 2008, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Ellie O. Johnson, Sr.

Margaret’s deep faith and love of God began as a child at New Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. After marriage, she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a devoted, life-long member and served in numerous ministries including: Senior Choir for 49 years, Advisor for the Junior Choir, Senior Missionary Ministry, Adult Sunday School Class, Student #2, Pastor’s Aide Ministry, Senior Citizens Ministry, Ward Club #2 and CHURCH MOTHER.

She had an eighth grade education that did not deter her from living an accomplished and rich life. As the family matriarch and honorary “Mayor of Logan Street”, her strength, wisdom and courage, coupled with her intense love of family, church and community are what truly defined her. She worked very hard to create a well-rounded life for herself and her family and instilled the values of education, respect, hard work and religion in her sons.

From 1945 through the late 1950’s, she worked full time and took care of her family. The welcome mat was always out for visitors to her home and they would always be met with a warm smile, a big hug and a great meal.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Prudence C. Ellis and Mammie C. Shumate and two brothers, Clyde Cureton and Adgar Cureton.

Those left to celebrate her life are her four sons, Ellie O. (Mary Jo) Johnson Jr., of Cincinnati, OH, Apostle Marvin (Apostle Annie Mae) Johnson of Greenville, SC, James A. Johnson of Lawton, OK, and Willie H. (Shirley) Johnson of Greenville, SC; nine grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Who Can Find a Precious Jewel?
Who can find a more precious jewel? Yes, Margaret C. Johnson, a most Virtuous woman. A woman with a purpose, not perfect, nor does God expect us to be. A hard working woman with truthful and faithful love for her family and others.
She was honest, respectful, forgiving, supportive, kind and encouraging. Favour
Is deceitful and beauty is vain; but a woman who feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. (Proverbs 31:30) her motto was, do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. Our lives were blessed to have had her as a mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, she will be cherished forever.
