Mrs. Mary Katherine Hall was born to the late Mr. Raymond “Sam” Jones and Mrs. Leslie Spivey Jones in Chattahoochee County, Cusseta, Georgia, on November 15, 1946. She was raised in the countryside of Northwest Georgia, farmland. Mary spoke fondly of the agricultural education she received on the land that she helped cultivate.
After having left Chattahoochee County for New York in 1965, to live with her older sister, Emma Jones Thornton and Jimmy Lee Thornton on Green Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, she met her late husband, John Arthur Hall, Jr. They were married on November 12, 1966, at Antioch Baptist Church and gave birth to their dear daughter and only child, Racheal Raquel on June 15, 1967.
After 22 years in Brooklyn, she moved to Greenville, South Carolina where she fulfilled her dream of owning her own home. She loved South Carolina and considered the Carolinas home.
Anyone who knew Mary could attest to her talent in home décor. She loved portraits and impressionist paintings which lined the walls of her home. Using this gift of interior design with friends and family made her happy as did her garden where she planted and cared for daffodils, petunias and her beloved dogwood tree.
But most of all it was her daughter, grandkids, family and friends whom she dearly loved, and she was quick to say how she “always held loved ones in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Leslie Jones; her husband, John A. Hall, Jr.; three sisters, Evelyn Jones, Weltha Sutton and Ida Mae Jones; and a brother, Major Jones.
Left to cherish many fond and loving memories are her daughter, Racheal Hall Short of Brooklyn, NY; her son-in-law, Ronald Short of Brooklyn, NY; her grandchildren, Elijah Michael Short and Joshua Benjamin Short; three sisters, Emma Thornton and Juanita Chinn, both of Brooklyn, NY and Patricia Pollard of Columbus, GA; five brothers, Hayward Jones of Hampton, VA, Maurice (Gloria) Jones of Columbus, GA, Raymond (Gloria) Jones, Jr., of Rock Edge, FL, George (Veronica) Jones of Port Orange, FL and Nathaniel Jones of Atlanta, GA; cherished friends, Bobby and Lolita Jones, Barbara Meadows and Eugene “Paul” Jenkins; her neighbors, Jeane Vincent and Family, Gerald and Gail Ramsey, Myra Gallagher; and a host of other relatives and friends.
