Mrs. Mary Jackson departed this life on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at her home in Easley, South Carolina. She was born on November 25, 1935, in Anderson County, South Carolina to the late Benjamin Franklin Jones and Matilda Jones. Mary was the twelfth of fourteen children. In her early years, she was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Mary married Sylvester on September 1, 1953, and moved to New York City, where she resided for over 50 years. She spent most of her life working and volunteering in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Mary was a life-long “Community Activist”. She loved advocating for families and was very active in local politics. Mary received numerous awards and recognition for her hard work and dedication. Through the years, she served on boards and actively participated in: The Black Spectrum Theater Company, The Madame C.J. Walker Foundation (Queens Chapter), Community Services Board #12, Guy R. Brewer United Democratic Club, State Committee Member (elected). While raising her family, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Queens College, Queens, NY.
She leaves to cherish fond memories: her husband, Sylvester Jackson, Sr.; two daughters, Sharon Jackson and Darlene Jackson (Timothy) Jones; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Jackson; three brothers ,Wallace Jones of New York, NY, Ralph Jones of Dover, DE and Tony Jones (Pearl) of New York, NY; one sister, Elizabeth Grice of New York, NY; four sisters-in-law, Arbutis Davis of Easley, SC, Odena Rosemond of Easley, SC, Jeanette (Woodrow) Williams of Easley, SC and Etta Lee of New York, NY; six grandchildren, Noah Jackson, Maya Porbeni, Miles Goodloe, Jolieba Blount, Isaiah Jones and Justin Jones; three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, devoted relatives and friends.
Along with her parents, she was preceeded in death by her son, Sylvester Jackson, Jr.; nine siblings, Joseph Jones, Vernelia Jackson, James Jones, Hovie Jones, William Jones, Mildred Jones, Ruth Jones, Susie Mae Mattison, and Frances Anderson.
