Mayo Croft

August 15, 1922 — September 13, 2016

Mrs. Mayo "June" Duckett Croft, 94, was born in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late John W. and Alma Riley Duckett.  Her journey ended on this side on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at Spring Park Senior Living in Travelers Rest, South Carolina.

Mrs. Croft was a graduate of the renowned Sterling High School. She was formerly employed at Carolina Blouse Factory and later worked as a librarian.

She was a devoted member of the Springfield Baptist Church for 85 years, during which her strong alto voice resounded faithfully in the Junior, Intermediate, Young Adult or Senior choir until the year 2000.

She was a bridge enthusiast and was a member of Les Bonnes Amies Bridge Club. In 1987, she
organized a bridge class at the Nicholtown Community Center.  By late 1997, that group had evolved into the Nicholtown Center Duplicate Bridge Club, which became the first predominantly Black bridge club in South Carolina to be sanctioned by the national body, the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL).  Today, the club exists as the West End Center Duplicate Bridge Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlton Croft, Jr.; sisters, Elizabeth Duckett and Margarite Singh and a brother, John Wesley Duckett.

Left to cherish many fond and loving memories are her daughter, Ruth Croft Phelps of Canton, MI; brother, Lewis (Catherine) Duckett of Minneapolis, MN; grandson, Nyamekye Phelps of Canton, MI; nieces and nephews, Beverly Duckett-Edward of Oak Park, IL, Robert Duckett of Charlotte, NC, Eric McElrath of Greenville, SC, R.C. Gamble of Fairfax, VA and John Gamble of Maryland along with a host of great-nieces and great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
