Mr. Melvin Bates

Mr. Melvin Bates, Jr. 79 of Greenville, SC passed away Saturday, October 26, 2024 at Prisma Health. He was the son of the late Mr. Melvin Bates, Sr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Gladys Beasley Bates. Melvin was a truck driver for over 50 years. He started his career with Francis Produce before joining  Jonathan Logan. He was an avid member of the Rooster Channel Jumpers CB Club. Melvin married Lillian Starks Bates on July 1, 1968. They were married 56 years at the time of his passing. To this union they had two children Fernando Bates and Gema Bates-Mangrum (Patrick). Three  grandchildren Kelsi Bates, Payton Mangrum and Eryn Mangrum. Melvin was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Lewis Bates and Calvin Jean Bates.

He is survived by one brother Lorenzo (Temechia) Bates. Left to cherish Melvin’s fond and precious memories are his three sisters Gennie (Marion)  Makins, Carolyn Makins, Deloris (Arto) Johnson. A cousin reared in the home, Doris Ann Teague and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
