Rev. Thomas Canty, Sr., age 87, of Greenville, South Carolina, peacefully transitioned from this life on Monday, December 5, 2016 at his home. Born on October 20, 1929, in Piedmont, South Carolina, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Weinburg and Carrie Seaborn Canty of Greenville, SC; two brothers, George W. Canty of Portsmouth, VA and Emanuel Canty of Greenville, SC; and one sister, Grace Canty Mahaffey of Greenville, SC.
He received his formal education in Greenville County Schools and at Greenville Technical College. After joining the United States Army, he traveled nationally and abroad, served in the Korean War and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. He was employed as an over the road truck driver at John D. Hollingsworth on Wheels, Inc., where he retired after 45 years of committed service.
Baptized at an early age, he joined Flat Rock Missionary Baptist Church in Piedmont, where he served faithfully for many years in numerous capacities including: the Trustee Board; Deacon Board; Ward Leader; Senior Choir President; All Male Chorus; Usher Board; Sunday School Treasurer for 35 years; and a member of the Ministerial Team. He later joined Rock of Ages Baptist Church where he attended until his health declined.
Rev. Canty was also very active in his community and a member of several auxiliaries and organizations including: Captain Charles F. Gandy, Jr. VFW Post 6734; Azah Temple of Shriners #140; Holly Spring Masonic Lodge #150; and Order of the Eastern Star Holly Spring Chapter 31.
On September 26, 1958, he was joined in holy matrimony with Vernell (Sherman) Canty, and to their union three children were born. In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by two daughters, Dr. Mary Ann Canty(Dr. Herbert II) Merrill of Denver, CO and Charlene Canty Gilliam of Greenville, SC; one son, Thomas (Karen) Canty, Jr. of Simpsonville, SC; three grandchildren, Kearsten J. Gilliam of Charlotte, NC and Mariah C. Canty and Christian Tre’ Canty of Simpsonville, SC; three sisters-in-law, Annie M. Kelly of Simpsonville, SC, Dorothy Sherman and Eleanor Canty of Greenville, SC; and a host of other relatives and friends.
