Sadie Chapman

January 18, 1917 — February 7, 2018

Mrs. Sadie Jane Chapman received her call to join God in Heaven on February 7, 2018. Robin Sadie Jane was born on January 18, 1917, in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late Charles H. and T. Cora Blasingame. She was the seventh of eleven children.

She accepted Christ at a young age and became a member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church. During her years there, she was a member of the choir, a devoted member of the United Methodist Women and was church financial secretary. Her devotion and love for her church was evident in all she did and continued when she had to move to Pittsburgh to be with her daughter.

In October of 1940, she was united in marriage to the late Frank Chapman. They made their home in Easley, South Carolina, where they raised a daughter, Cora Lee. Sadie and Frank attended both Bethlehem and John Wesley United Methodist Churches.

Sadie retired as a cafeteria manager of the Clearview School in Easley. She was a founding member of the White Rose Garden Club, the first recognized African American Garden Club in Easley. During a Black history Parade in Easley, she was asked to serve as grand marshal in honor of her many contributions to the Easley community. She also founded the Robin Sadie Jane Linen Club. Her many community efforts included being an Ambassador for the March of Dimes, supporting Easley Baptist Hospital and helped cook in local food kitchens. Her life centered around helping others.

After moving to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sadie attended St. Mark AME Church with her daughter, Cora, and granddaughter, Cheryl, where she was loved by all.

Sadie leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted daughter, Cora L. Thomas; grandchildren, Cheryl Thomas, and James R. (Doris) Thomas, all of Pittsburgh, PA. Sadie is also survived by four great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Preceding her in death was her granddaughter, Viola Jane Jackson.

Sadie’s soul was grounded in Jesus. She created a legacy of love, commitment to God and dedication to community.
