Sallie Johnson

June 30, 1923 — July 9, 2017

Mrs. Sallie Mary Johnson, 94, of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, departed this life on Sunday, July 9, 2017, in Hartford, Connecticut. She was born in Greenville County and was a daughter of the late William and Hattie Brown Leveston.

“May the Works I’ve Done Speak for Me” is not only a song but the very testament of life for our beloved Sallie Mae Johnson. Sallie Mae was first and foremost a God-fearing woman and a loving care support to those in the Travelers Rest area. Her home was a mainstay for teenagers and adults alike. Among being a mothering spirit to those around her she was also a devoted member of Saint Luke United Methodist Church of Travelers Rest. While she served faithfully as the president of the United Methodist Women, she was a member of the trustee board, she was also a loyal and dedicated member to the St. Luke Sunday School department. She also used her talent and singing ability as well to be a member of the St. Luke Adult Choir and she was one of the founding members of the Saint Luke Supreme Angels, a gospel group that she sang with for 30 plus years. She served as Chaplain and served along with Rachel Henderson as a member of the dress committee. She played a very instrumental role in the rebuilding of the New St. Luke United Methodist Church after the church had been destroyed by fire. She was most helpful through her time, service, and finances.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Johnson; a daughter, Mongella Blassingame; four brothers, Harold, William, Garfield and Edward Leveston and five sisters, Helen Lathan, Lottie Mitchell, Earnestine Kirksey, Willie Mae Poole Ager and Hazel Miller.

Left to treasure fond memories are her sons, Tommy (Sharon) Johnson of Greer, Otis Blassingame of Travelers Rest, SC and Justin Blassingame of Taylors, SC; sisters, Frances Major of Hartford, CT. and Gail McBee of Simpsonville, SC; five grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
