Sylvester Golden

June 6, 1925 — June 1, 2014

The Reverend Sylvester Golden Sr. departed this life on Sunday June 1st, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital, surrounded by loving family and a host of friends. Born June 6, 1925, he was the son of the late John Wesley Golden and Mary J. Golden.

He was educated in the Laurens County School System and did advanced studies at Martha Washington Vocational School in Washington D.C., Union Baptist Seminary in New Orleans, LA, Starks Theological Seminary and Benedict College in Columbia, SC.

On September 27, 1948, Pastor Golden was called into the ministry and gave his trial sermon under the direction of the late E. W. Wright, Pastor of the New Bethlehem Baptist Church, Princeton SC, where he received his license to preach and teach the Word of God. He was later ordained in 1951. His attributes include those of Nehemiah, a cupbearer, a founder, a developer and builder of many churches throughout Greenville, Anderson and Laurens Counties. He served as pastor of Mount Able Baptist Church in Anderson, SC, Golden Temple Baptist, Paris Community, Greenville, SC, and Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Fountain Inn, SC. In 1965, he founded Golden View Baptist Church in Fountain Inn, SC, and in 1969 he founded Piedmont Manor Baptist Church in Greenville SC, where he served as Senior Pastor until being called home.

In addition to his church ministry, God also blessed him with a radio ministry that started in 1967, which included WLBG in Laurens, SC, WFIS in Fountain Inn, SC, WHYZ in Greenville, SC and WPJM in Greer, SC. In the early 1990’s, he founded the What’s Up Gospel Hour TV Ministry on WGGS (channel 16), Greenville, SC, where he reached over 550,000 viewers on his weekly broadcast. He has licensed, ordained and mentored many pastors throughout the upstate.


He leaves to cherish his many fond and precious memories two daughter, Margaret Thomason of Pelzer, SC, Shirley Golden of Greenville, SC; Two sons, Sylvester Golden (Martha) and David Timothy Golden of Greenville, SC; Two granddaughters: Monica Golden and JazBriel A. Golden Both of Greenville, SC; Three grandsons: Sylvester Golden III and Glenn Charles Thomason Jr. Both of Greenville, SC, and Timothy Martin Golden of Covington, KY; three sisters: Grace Stewart of Greenville, SC, Mary Jean Douglas Parham of New York and Clara Johnson of Patterson, NJ; Four Brothers: Marshall Golden (Minnie) and Pelham Golden (Earlene) both of Florida, Elbert Golden (Rev. MayFrancis Golden) and George Golden (Celestine) both of Greenville, SC; Devoted niece, Hattie Gamble (raised in the home) of Greenville, SC.

Reverend Golden was predeceased by his wife Marcell M Golden; a son Martin Ray Golden; A son-in-law, Glenn Charles Thomason Sr. and a number of brothers and sisters.

Visitation: Friday, June 6, 2014, 7:00 – 8:00 PM at Reedy River Baptist Church.

Funeral Service: Saturday, June 7, 2014, 2:00 PM at Springfield Baptist Church, with burial in New Bethlehem Church Cemetery, Princeton.
