Timothy Griffin

April 8, 1961 — December 6, 2019

Mr. Timothy Jerome Griffin of Greenville, South Carolina, departed this life on Friday, December 6, 2019, at Prisma Health Upstate. During his illness he was supported by his family, friends and loved ones until his transition.

Tim was born in Greenville, and was raised in New York by his mother, Mary Griffin Singleton and loving stepfather, the late Alvin (Sonny) Singleton.

He was educated in the New York public school system where he excelled, especially in math. Although he passed the exam to attend and was accepted at the Bronx High School of Science, he chose to attend Julia Richman High School.

His spiritual growth and development began at an early age at Downtown Baptist Church where he was baptized in 1977. He then became a member of the Usher Board and Walking Deacon Fellowship Program. During his lifetime, Tim was the manager of Sonny’s Fish & Chips, Taft Kitchen Restaurant and Brownstone Grocery, all in New York City. After relocating to Greenville, he became an entrepreneur. His company provided janitorial and landscaping services.

Tim loved life, especially music, and socializing was on the top of his list. He had a hearty laugh and he cherished his sons, grandchildren, family and friends. He also had a hearty appetite and loved to eat his favorite food, fried chicken.

Throughout his illness he remained kind, charming, good natured and encouraging until the very end.

He was preceded in death by his loving grandmother, Lizzie M. Sullivan Hall; grandfathers, John Hall and Codal Griffin; father, Alvin Sonny Singleton; uncles, Milford Sullivan, Willie J. (Bill) Griffin, Sr., and Lawrence (Buck) Ascue; six aunts, Shirley J. Griffin, Ola M. Barton, Helen Ravenell, Florence (Maybell) Thompson, Albertha (Bert) Singleton and Celeste Allen.

Left to rejoice in his life’s memories are his pride and joys: sons, Timothy G. Griffin and Brian Massey; grandsons,Timothy J. (TJ) Griffin III, Justice Griffin and Gavin Griffin; and his granddaughter, Timia Griffin. He will forever be in the hearts of his loving mother, Mary Griffin-Singleton; his faithful brother, Alvin Singleton; and grateful sisters, Towanda LaFaye Griffin of New York, Linda Garner of Alabama, and Layvonne Garner of Virginia; his cherished aunts, Nellie Brock, Irene Griffin and Cynthia Griffin, all of Greenville SC, and Agnes Ascue of Awendaw, SC; his esteemed uncles, John (Sharyl) Hall of California, Codell Griffin, David Griffin and Howard Griffin, all of Greenville, SC, and George Singleton and Joseph (Patricia) Singleton, both of Awendaw, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and loved ones.
