William Chapman

William Chapman of Prairie View, Texas died on Thursday, July 3, 2014. He was the son of the late Hulon Chapman and Harriet Chapman Clayton. Bill was born, raised, and educated in Greenville, and graduated from Sterling High School in 1955.

Bill was a distinguished Professor of English at Prairie View A&M University from 1966 until his retirement in 2004. He received his B.S. from North Carolina A&T State University and his M.A. from the University of Iowa. Bill also studied at the University of Michigan and the University of London.

Bill is survived by three brothers, Harold Chapman, Sr. of New York; Phillip Chapman, Sr. of Greenville; and James Clayton of Houston, Texas; one sister, Nedra Booker of Greenville; and a host of other family members.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Greater St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church in Hempstead, Texas, and a wake was held on Friday, July 11, 2014 in the Chapel of Prairie View A&M University. Burial was in the Prairie View A&M University Cemetery.
