Mr. Winfred C. Daniels, was born on November 9, 1921 to Carl Edward and Allene Savage Daniels in Hawkinsville, Georgia (Pulaski County). After watching his all-time favorite Atlanta Braves lose another game, he passed as he quietly slept on August 26, 2015.
His training to become a Master Trade Craftsman started early in his father’s owned Custom Tailoring Shop on South Pryor Street in Atlanta, Georgia, while he was also attending Our Lady of the Lourdes Catholic School.
After the death of his father, Winfred moved to Macon, Georgia and attended St. Peter Claver Catholic School. He later enrolled and graduated from St. Emma’s Industrial Agricultural Military Institute in Rock Castle, Virginia, where he excelled in tailoring and ROTC. It was there that met & later married Justine Goldsmith. They were blessed with five children – Cecilia (James) McAdams of Columbus, OH, Carl Edward Daniels (deceased), Frances Peck of El Cajon, CA, Russelle (Wallace) Keese of Kathleen, GA, and Patrick (Ruby) Daniels of Piedmont, SC.
Eight Grandchildren – Johnna (Jeff) Hermann, Jamal (Ish) Daniels, Leslie (Demare) Foster, Patrick Christopher Daniels, Danielle Keese, Adam Keese, Lathan (Naama) Boyce, & Tonia (Stephen) Hill
Ten Great-Grandchildren – Kierra Burden, Jaliza Hermann, Brooke Foster, Joze Hermann, Layla Daniels, Lauren Glenn, Jasmine Hill, Caleb Hill, & Joshua Hill
One Great-Great-Grandchild – Makhi Blakley
He was named the Outstanding Tradesman for his class for every year attended St. Emma’s and was also named an expert marksman with the Shooting Team. He studied Vocational and Industrial Education at South Carolina State College, Clemson University, and University of South Carolina.
Winfred earned his trade name of “Olde Master Tailor” from diverse experiences as a tailor in Atlanta, Georgia and as instructor of Clothing and Equipment in the United States Army Cadre Quartermaster Training Center, Camp Lee, Virginia. Moving to Greenville, South Carolina with his family, he became Head Tailor at Heyward Mahon Company where as the Head Tailor, he refused to sweep the floor. He was also Head Tailor at Stewart and Merritt Company where his infamous Patch Suit graced the window of this distinguished local haberdashery and established his reputation as a Master Tailor.
Additionally, he was Head Instructor of the Tailoring Department at the Veterans Training Program at Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, SC. He also taught for Greenville County Schools for 35 years at Sterling High School, Parker High School, and Enoree Vocational Center. He retired in 1981 and worked part-time positions with department stores and contracted with E. C. Bumgardners, Ballew & Scott Men’s Clothing, Rush Wilson Limited, Frank Pettigrew Men’s Clothing, Jack Runnion Limited Men’s Clothing, Stone Brothers, Sears, Ivey’s, Dillard’s, and JB White.
Among the organizations and affiliations he was proud to be involved in: his membership at St. Anthony Catholic Church, his Double Gold Life membership with the NAACP, a retired member of the South Carolina Educators Association, a Sponsor of the Center for Education Equality, a Life Patron Member of the National Rifle Association, Grass Roots Gun Rights of South Carolina, an Honorary Member of the Waffle House, Inc. and S&S Cafeteria Greenville, SC
