Mrs. Yvonne Sherman Johnson, affectionately known as “Mema” and “Bonnie Cat,” was the second of five daughters born to the late Thomas V. and Thelma L. Sherman. She was born on May 18, 1940, in Greenville County and departed this life on Saturday, November 28, 2015.
Yvonne was a 1958 graduate of Sterling High School where she played basketball for the Sterling Tigers her senior year. After high school she studied nursing and worked in the operating room at Greenville General Hospital before becoming a nurse’s assistant for the late Dr. Paul Hearn for 12 years. She was married to the father of her three children, the late Rev. Monroe M. Johnson, of Piedmont, SC, for 31 years.
She was employed with Union Carbide, later known as Kemet Electronics, for more than 30 years. While working full-time at Kemet, she also worked part-time at Walmart as a cashier for more than 10 years. She retired from Kemet Electronics in 2001 to help her mother care for her terminally ill father. She then cared for her terminally ill mother until her passing in 2011. Yvonne was always a great cook and caretaker for her family.
She accepted Christ at the age of 13, and joined Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Gospel Choir and Usher’s Ministry. She was also a dedicated member of the Gospel Joynotes for more than 20 years. She had a love for gospel music and enjoyed singing and listening to gospel music whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Yvonne was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Abraham and Sarah Davidson.
She leaves to cherish fond loving memories three loving and devoted children: a daughter, Velma R. “Tater” Johnson and two sons, M. Willie “Bobo” Johnson and Montauge O. “Boot” (Cynthia) Johnson all of Greenville SC; two sisters, Gerrilene S. “Twin” Gaines and Freddie B. “Fred” Pendergrass both of Greenville SC; one god-sister, Minister Barbara (Frank) Davis of Mauldin, SC; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; one aunt and a host of other relatives and friends.
